Violas
Violas are one of the first flowering plants of the spring season. We think of them as one of our “signature plants” at the Potting Shed. They have a fantastic appearance in the spring and while they will slow down blooming in the summer months, they take off again in the fall, blooming up to the first hard frost.

The compact plants are often covered with large, colorful blooms. Violas range in color from sunny yellow and rich orange to deep purple and sky blue and often feature bi-color blossoms. They are good plants to tuck in anywhere in the garden where you would like a bit of cool-season color.
So what do these colorful powerhouses need? For the most blooms, pinch off fading flowers. Fertilize regularly to stimulate continual bloom. Violas do well in the sun but will tolerate partial shade. They do need to be watered regularly and will start to wane as the temperatures climb.
Some varieties of violas have been used medicinally and all types are good for pressing and drying for decorative use. Violas are also edible, try a few on your next salad. Regardless of how you plan to enjoy this cheerful long-blooming plant, every garden has room for some violas. We currently have a large selection of violas and pansies that are in bloom right now.
