The Potting Shed is owned by Michelle Philpot. Michelle has degrees in horticulture and recreation/parks administration from Eastern Kentucky University. She brings more than 20 years or horticultural experience to the job including 7 years as Greenhouse Manager and Buyer at Hillenmeyer's Nursery in Lexington. Michelle took the leap and started her own business in Berea in 2003.

The Potting Shed currently employs 8 professionals on staff, and most of them have been with Michelle for quite a while. The biggest plus is that most have gardened in the area for years and are happy to share their wealth of experience with customers.

The Potting Shed will continue to use plants, seeds, and chemicals that are organic or biodegradable as much as possible. They have certified organic potting mix, pot maker kits, fiber degradable pots, cocoa or moss liners, organic cotton t-shirts and biodegradable shopping bags. This year, they have increased the plants grown locally and have more than 50 varieties of heirloom tomato seedlings available.
